Korean is the official language of both North and South Korea and Yanbian. Hangul is the official script of the Korean language and was developed in the fifteenth century. Generally Hangul is written in rows from left to right and read from top to bottom but it can also be written in columns from top to bottom and read from right to left. Modern Korean is written with spaces between its words, a feature not found in Chinese or Japanese. Although used in both North and South Korea, differences and variations do arise in pronunciation, spelling, grammar and vocabulary between the countries.
